Here in northeastern SC, we had our first Rose-breasted Grosbeak of the season on September 16th. It was a female. This bird, of a species I associate with seed eating, was feeding enthusiastically on a mass of caterpillars that had been feeding on the leaves of a Sweet Gum tree. It left the site a couple of times to return at least 3 times to feast until all of the caterpillars were eaten. Upon finishing, it searched carefully to make sure it had missed none and then left for good.
I was happy to get some iPhone quality pictures of the event. We had another female Rose-breasted Grosbeak yesterday, and it fed on sunflower seeds as expected.
