All, Late this afternoon I heard a single type 1 evening grosbeak calling on the Mt. Gleason Road. The location was about a mile uphill from Mill Creek Summit in a grove of conifers and canyon live oaks on the north-facing slope of the road. The bird called about ten times and I managed to get a recording for about half of them: https://ebird.org/atlascalifornia/checklist/S397070056?subID=S397070056 Despite windy conditions in the general area, this particular stretch of the road was relatively calm and quite active with birds. I had hoped to check the conifers around Lightning Point Group Campground for nutcrackers, pinyon jays, and more grosbeaks, but the wind was howling and the only bird I found was a single brown creeper. On a more positive note, although this area burned quite a bit during the Station Fire in 2009, it was encouraging to see that a lot of conifers at higher elevations on Mt. Gleason are growing back.
