season is mostly over for us. The birds are heading to South America for the winter. This season was a bit below average A bit over 1700 of the little buteos were counted. Thanks to everyone who spotted those high birds in that deep blue sky. Early October is among my favorite times at Franklin Mountain. It is the period of greatest species diversity. Leaf color peaks and it isn't yet cold. Birds will be migrating, including those that use powered flight – falcons and accipiters. Gross numbers aren't usually high but on a good day you can sometimes see 10 species. An early October day with ideal wind conditions (moderate NW winds) is a real treat. I will send out an alert when I see those ideal conditions in the forecast. Later in October we should see an increase in Red-tailed Hawks and the first Golden Eagles. This week has three dry days forecast mid-week. NW winds show up several days, including in the long-range forecast for Saturday, the day of our Open House. Let's hope they are right. Mark your calendar: The annual Franklin Mountain Open House will be held on Saturday, October 3.
