This morning Jeff Bray, Curtis Marantz, and I drove to the Munhall Saddle
(Los Pinos trailhead). We were at the top by 0615. At 0655 we had a silent
Clark's Nutcracker land at the top of one of the two pines just west of the
Los Pinos trailhead, poke around for about 30 seconds, and then silently
take off again to the southeast. We spent the next 3.5 hours going up and
down the saddle and watching what remains of the old Coulter pine grove.
While we had a decent list, especially for a day when there was extremely
little migratory movement going on up there, we did not encounter any other
nutcrackers or any other rare mountain birds. Thanks again to Loren Wright
for doing the initial legwork to find that these were occurring in Orange
County this fall.
As an aside, the Red-breasted Nuthatches will drop off the eBird filters
later this week for those of you getting tired of 500 notifications a day.
