In response to Art Check's question about the actively vocalizing pileated woodpecker, perhaps it is a first year bird that wandered into new territory after leaving its sibling group. I've noticed that around the fall equinox, an adult bird would encounter an environment that mimics the springtime and this may cause the hormonal reaction that will soon fade as the daylight hours decrease. This is one reason we occasionally hear birds sing courting/territory songs in the fall. Tony Sotelo
