I revisited my location from two days ago. It is on the Bear Gulch trail at approximate GPS location 37.410384, -122.264329. Looking downslope from there today, I saw at least three trees with sapsucker holes. From which bird and how recently, I can't say. I didn't see any woodpeckers today, but the trails are much busier on weekends, so I will try again next week. The area between this trail location and the stable is the area where I saw the bird.
A red-breasted sapsucker would be more likely, I know...
