It is getting close to the beginning of our 23rd season of survey work for the Winter Raptor Survey Project sponsored by the East Cascades Bird Alliance based in Bend, OR. We ended last winter with 657 active routes surveyed by just over 500 primary volunteers throughout all of OR, WA, and ID, along the northern tier of CA and UT, throughout western MT, and along the southern edge of British Columbia.
The Klamath Basin supports a very healthy population of birds of prey and is a critical part of the project! I am writing to inform you that we have 4 routes that need some help with surveys this winter in the Basin. They include:
Malin - 48 miles long
Keno - 23 miles
Sheepy Creek - Laird’s Landing (CA) - 34 miles
Willow Creek - Red Rock Rd (CA) - 33 miles
Our primary survey period is December through February with additional optional survey opportunities in November and March. We ask project volunteers to commit to three surveys covering the primary period. Surveys are done once a month on a date of the volunteers choosing to accommodate personal life schedules or circumventing bad weather conditions. Folks participating should feel comfortable with identifying the common raptor species that winter in the Basin.
With a little over 4 weeks remaining before optional November surveys begin (about half the routes in the project are surveyed in November), I am hoping to fill these routes with folks interested in chasing birds of prey in the Basin this winter :). If this sounds like something interesting to you and you wish to join in on the fun, please email me directly as soon as you can with your route preference(s), I will fill these on a first come first served basis and once you commit, I will provide further details on what you will be doing on these surveys and how.
