Visitors: Big thanks to Andrew, Cameron, Hugh, Jaron, Karen, Liz, Michael, Mike, Matt, Noah, Bryan, Fran and Peter for great observing and counting! Was good to see again Toni and Lou, Brian, Pat, Evelyn, Neil and Marianne, Heather and Alban, Corinne, Alex and friends. All took a great interest in the Hawk Watch! Great to see 2 banded Coopers Hawk being brought up to the tower by Allan!
Weather: Moderate wind coming through from the North, our favourite direction! Temperature started off cool at 11c slowly rose to 24c. Light cloud clover throughout day. Great clear visibility. A good comfortable day on the tower.
Raptor Observations: Turkey Vultures (502) led the pack with Sharp-Shinned Hawks (487) following closely behind. Good to see a few Broad Winged Hawks (115) still trickling across. All falcons were represented with good numbers of American Kestrels (115), Merlins(3) and a late Peregrine Falcon (1) carrying a blue jay for its evening snack.
Non-raptor Observations: American Pelicans (226) wowed the crowd with its their majestic flight displays. Blue Jays (21283) continued to flow through with similar number from yesterdays. 9 Warbler species spotted today with a large group of Yellow Rumped (16). A first of the season a Pine Siskin was heard flying over. Good views of a Common Nighthawk later on in the day. A late lone Purple Martin was also sighted.
We witnessed a territorial dispute between 2 large male common snapping turtles in the pond.
Predictions: Tomorrow brings us another day of favourable north winds!
