Tweets - Changes are afoot as we enter into the darker half of the year. It was a chilly 49 degrees to start, and we were mostly under overcast skies. Winter birds are arriving, and we've lost most or all of our "summer" birds.
Highlights: Cackling Goose - One with Canadas on Fields 7-8-9. First of Fall (FOF) Hooded Merganser - One at the Rowing Club - First since early August. Does that make it (FOF)? Band-tailed Pigeon - Distant flyby of ~6. Last of the year, possibly California Scrub-Jay - One heard at East Meadow (FOF) Ruby-crowned Kinglet - Single birds, East Meadow and Rowing Club (FOF) Pacific Wren - One at the Rowing Club (FOF) Evening Grosbeak - One high over the weir area, calling CHIPPING SPARROW - One in the NE corner of the Pea Patch. First of Year (FOY) Black-throated Gray Warbler - One below the weir with Yellow-rumps Townsend's Warbler - One at Rowing Club with Yellow-rumps; for the survey, (FOY)
The CHIPPING SPARROW is both First of Year and very likely Last of Year. We've never had one after September. Probably also our last BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER. We had no Osprey, Swainson's Thrush, nor Western Tanager, and those are all probably done for the year.
Missing birds today included American Coot, Green Heron, American Barn Owl, Barn Swallow, American Pipit, Savannah Sparrow, and Orange-crowned Warbler.
For the day, 56 species. For the year, the survey is at 122 species.
