I am hoping this group can help out with this sad request - note of an injured Great Egret in the vicinity of the Arlington Res or Spy Pond. I have attached recent photos. WARNING, they are a bit graphic.
The attempted rescue back on September 15 did not succeed, as the Egret flew off. It was noted, however, that this bird was injured. I have noted them to have roosted at McClennen Park retention pond since early last month. At this juncture, they should be well headed south. To date, only the uninjured one still roosts there but flies to the Rez at first light.
I have been monitoring these birds since 9/18 and it showed up at the Res on the 18th but not since. This egret has a large fish hook in its left foot *and* missing 2 toes, same foot. This catastrophic injury has caused it to struggle to fish and I cannot find it as of the last couple of days.
Its mate is still around at the Rez, but I'm afraid this bird is elsewhere. I've only monitored it at the Rez I believe once. So this is where I need your help.
Have you seen this injured bird? It has a severe limp (favoring it's left leg) and cannot perch correctly. The Arlington Animal Control Officer is well aware of the issue, but trying to find birds is similar to lost dogs. Very hard to monitor and actually know where to look.
So please, if you do find a sad, limping Great Egret, can you please let me/this list know. I will relay any sightings to the ACO.
