Here is what Ken Rosenberg (retired from Cornell Lab of Ornithology) sent me re: the nutcracker phenomenon.
“It is now a westwide phenomenon, with nutcrackers along the coast, in the deserts, and already east to Kansas. Also pinyon jays, nuthatches, evening grosbeaks, and other high-elevation conifer species. Most likely massive cone crop failure.”
My side note: I wonder if the massive cone crop failure is linked to the extreme drought in much of the Rockies and elsewhere.
