Each night just before sundown (6:40 to 7:00 last night) about 500 crows move up the Route 1 corridor past my house toward a roost or roosts in the Morro Bay area. Starting last week, flocks of 50 to 150 stop in a grove of trees near my house for about 20 minutes. They fuss and vocalize, then leave over a 5 minute period in groups of about 100.The general nightly movement toward roosts I understand. My question is, do they normally have stops like what I have described along the route? I always assumed that it was a direct flight.
