Visitors: 5 visitors today at the north lookout. Joined by Brody Ritter and Ron Kline. Brody was our MVP today helping us spot high birds, and Ron gave me some great spots to check out in Philly and NYC when I find time to visit.
Weather: 59-71 degrees F, but felt chillier than that. NNE to ENE wind with gusts up to 10. Full cloud cover moved in by noon.
Raptor Observations: Bald eagle (3): 0758i, 1028a, 1137i
Do you remember? The twenty-first night of September? I sure will, because a young peregrine put on a very memorable show bullying a local vulture before continuing south. Decent broad-winged action and harriers were also nice.
Non-raptor Observations: Probably 400-500 tree swallows and 50-75 northern rough-winged passed by the hawkwatch today. I think I caught the tail end of a blue jay flight this morning as well, along with cedar waxwings, Swainson's thrushes, yellow-rumped, scarlet tanager, and last but not least, a nice male black-throated blue on my way out. I believe the black streaks I saw on its back and the way it stayed deep in a mountain laurel thicket suggests this bird is part of the Appalachian population of BTBW, so it's either a local breeder or only just recently began its migration.
Predictions: A chance of showers, mainly before 10am (boooo). Cloudy, with a high near 61. Northeast wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
