The few hardy souls who braved the rain squalls to hit this trip to these NE Columbus hotspots found a good fallout punctuated by rain. We started at Academy Park, whose edges offered a good variety of migrants and residents, then went up to nearby Blendon Woods to try to pick up some of Bob McNulty's sightings, with limited success, before another rainstorm closed us out for the morning. I stayed through the rainstorm and birded the early afternoon there, adding only a few things. Notables for the morning included:
Raptors -- Red-shouldered hawks calling at both places; Merlin perched along Creek at Academy Park, so fluffed out trying to dry off that I initially mistook it for a Broad-winged Hawk.
Barred Owls -- 1 flew across the playfields at Academy Park, while another was calling along the Park Road in Blendon Woods
Sapsucker -- 1 was calling west of the Nature Center parking lot at Blendon Woods in both the morning and the afternoon Pileated Wpr -- 1 bird was on a snag at Academy, while 1-2 were calling at Blendon Flycatchers -- multiple Pewees at both spots; also had a Least Flycatcher at Academy and a Willow at Blendon Woods Vireos -- Red-eyed were at both spots, and a Philadelphia and a Warbling were at Academy Thrushes -- Swainsons were numerous at both spots, especially in the forest at Blendon Waxwings - small flocks of Cedar Waxwings were at both sites Warblers -- both sites had multiple small flocks, but poor light made IDing birds tricky. List included Tennessees, Magnolias, Nashville, Bay-breasted (many), Redstarts (Blendon), Black&Whites, Ovenbird (Blendon), and CommonYellowthroats
Sparrows -- surprisingly scarce, with only Songs and Towhee noted, both at Blendon Buntings -- Blendon had multiple Indigo Buntings Blackbirds -- Grackles at both spots, with a flock at Academy. Finches -- nothing beyond the usual House Finches and Goldfinches
