Hopefully Kimball will correct or amend what I am going to say: any place
with a lot of pines—probably—but not certainly with Jeffrey Pines. I know
that sounds vague and useless. Lightning may strike twice. I think someone
had Pinyon Jays again at Chilao, after a bunch of us didn’t have any last
Sunday. Were the most recent Chilao Pinyon Jays the same birds, or a new
set?
Table Mountain Frisbee Golf Course had some the other day. Where ever you
go, I think the real trick is to be there early in the morning, know what
Pinyon Jays sound like, and have Merlin running on your phone, in your
pocket.
I would expect that if someone went (in the morning!) up to the end of
Highway 39, where it ends (in the morning!) and hung out at Crystal Lake
Compground they would have them there. While there, you will have other
mountain birds like Townsend’s Solitaires pretending to be dull Western
Bluebirds, all three Nuthatch species, etc.
