Nebraska birders,
My friends Jessica Gorecki, Bill Flack and I birded in Hall County Park on Sunday, September 20. While we were there, we bumped into Colleen Childers, Steve Morris and Will. Soon after we started, we flushed a small group of Black-crowned Night-Herons from treetops. I was surprised to see Night-Herons in a city park and in trees. They are a new county bird for me.
The park was very quiet for most of the walk. We saw a few of the usual birds. We saw four or five hummingbirds at the feeders. They all appeared to be Ruby-throated. We saw one young male Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Finally, when we were about to quit, we saw one warbler. We could not identify it for sure. I think it was a young female Black-throated Green Warbler. Its throat, breast, belly and under-tail were white. There were two blurry gray streaks on each flank. It had two white wing bars on each wing. Its face pattern was like the male Black-throated Green Warbler that we saw a couple of days ago.
After lunch, Jessica and I walked the trail at Dannebrog in Howard County. We started near the water tower. We walked by the cemetery, around the sewage lagoons, into the woods, around the north side of town and back to the car. The birding was very quiet here as well. We did hear an Eastern Wood-Pewee and saw an Eastern Phoebe.
