Visitors: Lauren Kindred, her husband and her son; to Lauren goes the credit for spotting the second Harrier (my favorite hawk). Jenny and Chuck O'Brien, Allen Bird Club members; Jenny spotted several Broad-wings and a Kestrel during the final hour. Wes and his yellow lab Dinah, who once again displayed her talent for finding a pheasant decoy tossed far out into the tall grass.
Weather: Variably cloudy (cloud-cover ranging from 80% to 10% to 60%), with gloomy stratocumulus clouds at first, replaced by scattered high-altitude, gauzy clouds, followed in turn by stratocumulus again. Wind NW/NNW 3-8 mph. Temperature 69-73 F. Raptor Observations: Finally, a serious movement by Broad-wings; three-fifths of them (332) came through between 11:00 and 12:00 EDT. Cloud-cover was minimal at this time, and the birds were both high and far to the east, making a precise count difficult. Our tally (503) is no doubt an undercount. Not counted as migrants: 3 Turkey Vultures, adult Bald Eagle, Cooper's Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk.
Non-raptor Observations: Blue Jays (30 migrants, 2 local), American Crow, Common Raven, Black-capped Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, 3 Cedar Waxwings, American Goldfinch, male Eastern Towhee.
