An update to this post --
I did say that some numbers of storm-petrels may change, but didn't expect
them to change in this direction:
- Looking at plumage details in photos of the Wilson's Storm-Petrels
(mostly molt progression), we're up to at least 4 birds now. Three at the
277 Bank, and one at the Thirty Mile Bank.
- Incredibly, Mark Scheel has great photos of a *second *Wedge-rumped
Storm-Petrel from the trip, from the big flock on the dead animal at the
277 Bank. Unfortunately, it appears the rest of us on the boat were looking
in other directions at the time with thousands of storm-petrels around us.
Thankfully we found another bird later in the day, so Mark is off the hook.
4 Wilson's and 2 Wedge-rumped Storm-Petrels in one day has to be some sort
of record. There is a Pasadena Audubon trip going out to nearby waters this
weekend - good luck if you're on that boat! I don't know if there is room
on any other boats - most appear to be sold out.
