Joined by Ed Sinkler, Richard (just Richard, I'm told), Anthony Hoets, Sharon and Donald Holden, Travis Rennig, John Leskosky, and Bob Astelford. Special welcome back to Richard for making it up here for the first time since an injury last year!
Weather: 71-80 degrees, with spotty cloud cover. Light south to southwest wind briefly peaking at 6 mph.
Raptor Observations: Bald eagle (3): 1249a, 1252a, 1346i
Ed Sinkler and I enjoyed seeing lots of broad-wingeds kettling right in front of us early on. Flight slowed by midday, but there were still enough birds to keep us busy.
A juvenile turkey vulture clumsily swung at the owl decoy a couple times, and was later one-upped by a coop who acrobatically swiped at it before weaving into the thickets behind us.
As it migrated through, I picked out one partially leucistic turkey vulture that looked like it didn't finish rubbing in sunscreen around its neck. A charismatic group of 4 black vultures hung out just about the whole day, who I named John, Paul, George, and Ringo.
Non-raptor Observations: A flock of probably 100+ tree swallows briefly combined with a modest broad-winged kettle for some cool views. Also felt like there were more grasshoppers and singing cicadas than there have been recently in the warmer afternoon.
Predictions: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. Light south wind becoming southwest 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Lehigh Gap Nature Center (<mail...>) Bake Oven Knob information may be found at: www.lgnc.org
