If you are only interested in rare birds, you can stop now. If you care about migration and BirdCast, please continue. I've been using BirdCast since it came out, and I know that it is not designed to forecast daytime counts. But I would expect some correlation, and I have found none! I birded Saturday at Loyola Marymount University after a predicted High Volume night, and found one migrant. I birded there today after a predicted Low Volume night, and saw so many migrants that eBird flagged high counts on two of them. 8 Wilson's Warblers is unusual for LMU in the Fall, and 8 Warbling Vireos is unbelievable. I sometimes see large numbers of migrants here in the Spring, but rarely in the Fall. Many warbler-sized birds were left uncounted due to dim light, tall trees and neck issues. My counts are almost surely undercounts.
Do other birders have similar experiences with BirdCast? Do you ever count birds flying past the moon at night? Do you find correlation there? Do you find more daytime correlation in other places in Southern California? Do you find it in other parts of the country?
