This afternoon (~3pm) I was thrilled to see a male Lesser Goldfinch (LEGO) on our large 6-port tube-feeder. Exclamations of delight and a sprint for the camera (6 feet away) ensued.
I had been hoping to see if a male LEGO would appear in my yard again this fall, as in the past two years; the first sighting of this species in my yard was in late November 2024, with numerous more sightings each month through February 2025. After a 6-month hiatus, a male LEGO was sighted in the yard in late September 2025, again in December 2025, and again multiple times in January through late March of 2026. Then no LEGOs were seen for 5 months, until today. This green-and-yellow bird is a treat to see, especially now that the American Goldfinches are molting out of their bright breeding plumage.
I have submitted an eBird checklist and a couple of the photos for those who’d like to see them (spoiler alert—he looks the same as before). As in the previous two winters, I will be interested to see word of any other sightings of this species in the Snohomish County area.
