Thanks to Tim's update.
Sunday morning from roughly 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, we spent quite a bit of
time walking around the Chilao Visitor Center and Picnic Area. We listened
carefully and looked around, but we didn't find them. During that time,
we ran into four or five other birders, some of whom had arrived much
earlier. We also spoke with the staff at the visitor center. She mentioned
that no one had seen the Pinyon Jays this morning, but someone had reported
it on Saturday, which sounds like what you were referring to.
These Pinyon Jays were probably flying around in flocks, looking for a
reliable food source. They likely circled the Chilao Visitor Center area,
didn't find anything suitable to eat, and flew off somewhere else. So ...
