With cool temperatures and intermittent rain showers, the warbler and vireo watching was quite good in the Ledges State Park canyon during the morning hours. After patiently waiting, I think our group saw 9 warbler species, including nice, close, low-level looks at Black-throated Green, Bay-breasted, Golden-winged and Black and White Warblers.
As the IOU field trip group was leaving after a yard tour, a flock of Red Crossbills made a nice appearance, landing in the neighbor's trees.
Warblers and vireos continued to filter through my yard adjacent to the park well into the afternoon. Around 2 pm, I wandered out to the back yard garden to pick tomatoes to find the garden and surrounding trees buzzing with warblers at all levels. These included 6-8 Nashville Warblers, several Tennessee Warblers, plus a Golden-winged, Bay-breasted and Cape May Warbler. The best warbler activity in my yard in years!
Just before 7 pm, a large group of Common Nighthawks appeared and disappeared quickly, followed by another 16 a few minutes later.
