Observation start time: 07:00:00 Observation end time: 15:00:00 Total observation time: 8 hours
Official Counter: Paul Gosselin
Observers: Hugh Kent, Jaron Wilkinson, Josh Chaulk, Linda Wladarski, Liz Kent, Robin Smallwood
Visitors: Big thanks to Jaron, Josh, Robin, Linda, Liz and Hugh for helping with the count today. It was good to see Dave and Steve again and a good number of other visitors who showed an interest in the Hawk Watch.
Weather: Started humid with light west wind. Wind increased throughout the day and humidity reduced. Cloud cover was variable. Temperature rose through the day from 21c to 28c, pressure remained steady but lower than yesterday.
Raptor Observations: Sharp-shinned Hawk (142) again topped the list with American Kestrel (46) trailing second. A few more Buteos than yesterday with 12 Broad-winged Hawks seen quite high and 9 Red-tailed Hawks. Good diversity with 9 species but disappointingly no Peregrine.
Non-raptor Observations: A good diversity of warblers with 8 species seen. the Northern Waterthrush appeared again. Good numbers of Pied-billed grebe (19) and a seasons first of 28 American Coot. Two American Pelican flew over. Good numbers of Cedar Waxwings (318) and Purple Martins (27) are still coming through. Sparrow diversity is disappointingly low at the moment. The list can be found at https://ebird.org/checklist/S392676027
Predictions: A light wind is forecast to be north in the morning and NNE for the rest of the day. The temperature will be much cooler under a bright sky. Hopefully it will be a good day with more hawks, probably with the same mix as previous days. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Paul Gosselin (<paulgosselin25...>) Holiday Beach Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/
