Hello birders,
This morning, 13 September, there was a Western Cattle Egret in the San Gabriel River between Whittier Blvd and Dunlop Crossing. The riverbed is best viewed from the settling basins on the west side. The west side is higher so the view is better. In the very small basin adjacent to Washington Blvd on the extreme south end, there were three Solitary Sandpipers. The large south basin is still full and some water is spilling into this very small basin and creating some shorebird habitat. Lots of migrants in the area between Whittier and Washington Blvds. The riverbed, just upstream of Washington must have a lot of fish. It's a good place to watch Osprey diving for fish, including carp, tilapia and catfish.
There is an island in the south basin that is dominated by a Mulberry Tree that hosts numerous Neotropic Cormorants and at least three Neotropic Cormorant nests. Many fishing Neotropic Cormorants in the adjacent riverbed.
