Subject: [LACoBirds] Red-footed Booby and the apparent demise of the LACoBirds listserve
Birders,

I realize that posting rarities to this listserv is viewed as something as
archaic as using smoke signals or a telegraph to some, but many people
still use it and I don't know why we can't follow the lead of counties like
San Diego where there are daily reports of unusual birds and other
interesting sightings on their listserv. Yes, rabid listers and most
younger birders prefer other channels of communication, which is fine, but
can somebody using those channels also take a second to post information on
the LACoBirds listserv as well?

Sure, eBird alerts or WhatsApp/Discord/etc. channels probably alerted most
birders to the presence of a Red-footed Booby found early in this morning
at Malibu Lagoon and present later in the morning a ways east along PCH
(near the mouth of Tuna Canyon), but in the interest of wider communication
and discussion it would have been nice to have the sighting posted here.

The developing fall irruptions of species like Pinyon Jays, Clark's
Nutcrackers, and Red-breasted Nuthatches have been noted on some southern
California listservs in recent days (thanks Lance for posting your Pinyon
Jay near Buckhorn). Tracking those sorts of events would be an ideal use of
this listserv in addition to getting the word out about rarities.
