Observation start time: 07:30:00 Observation end time: 15:00:00 Total observation time: 7.5 hours
Official Counter: John Weeks
Observers: Allen Bird Club, Gary Adamson, John Weeks
Visitors: Today we held the Allen Bird Club's annual hawkwatch picnic.
Weather: Lots of hazy sunshine with gauze-thin clouds slowly gave way to thickening high-altitude stratus clouds (rain is to set in overnight). Light wind ENE shifting to SE then SW, never exceeding 7 mph. Temperature 62-72 F.
Raptor Observations: Given the wind direction(s), I expected a disappointing flight, and my expectation was not disappointed. The largest kettle comprised only 15 Broad-wings. Not counted as migrants: 2 Black Vultures, 2 Turkey Vultures, adult Bald Eagle, Cooper's Hawk, 2 Red-shouldered Hawks, Red-tailed Hawk.
Non-raptor Observations: Mourning Dove, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, 3 Chimney Swifts, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Phoebe, Blue Jay, American Crow, 2 Common Ravens, Black-capped Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, 9 Cedar Waxwings, 2 American Goldfinches. One (!) skulking warbler refused to show ID. Monarchs: 11. First spotted lanternfly (horrors) on Blueberry Hill.
Predictions: Rain; no watch planned. ======================================================================== Report submitted by John Weeks (<aerie.john...>)
