156. Hello to Melissa!
Weather:
Blue sky in the morning with cloud cover steadily increasing in the
afternoon as high clouds moved in from the south. Light breeze from the
southwest for much of the day. Very hazy in the distance. Temps in the low
fifties to high sixties.
Raptor Observations:
Small kettles of broad-wings occasionally popping up, one squadron of 40
birds, and the rest coming by in ones and twos. Similar pattern to Mount
Watatic and Wachusett, where the most birds came by during 10 and 11
o'clock, and then activity sharply dropped off. Last bird of the day was a
close Osprey flying almost directly overhead and giving great views.
Local sharpie played with the ravens over North Pack, local Merlin zipped
around Pack, three local Bald Eagles soared about here and there, and four
Turkey Vultures milled around.
Non-raptor Observations:
Other bird highlights included one Ruby-crowned Kinglet hopping about in
the spruces and eight Tree Swallows swooping over the valley. Many local
dragonflies around today including a pair of Mottled Darners.
Monarchs: 33/252
Predictions:
Rain showers tomorrow. Monday has good potential to be a big day. It's one
of the few days coming up here in broad-wing season with northwest winds.
The 14th was the biggest day last fall...
