Subject: [hmbirds] The view from below…
I’m fortunate to live in a place with a fine view of the Helderberg Escarpment, including the Overlook at Thacher Park. Many days, like today, I like to set up my spotting scope on my back deck and from time to time throughout the day take a gander at what’s happening in the skies during fall migration.

There was a fair amount of activity from mid-morning through mid-afternoon today. I saw both vultures (mostly TVs), some Bald Eagles, ravens, a couple kestrels, a Cooper’s Hawk, and numerous Broad-winged Hawks (at least 20-25) kettling up.

I was also pleased to spot three Common Nighthawks flying by, a group of two and a singleton, at about 1:30. Even from almost a mile away (through binoculars), they were unmistakeable.
