Greetings! This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, September
11, 2026 at 11:00 pm. The highlights of today’s tape are WHITE IBIS,
MISSISSIPPI KITE, SEDGE WREN, shorebirds including AMERICAN AVOCET,
UPLAND, BUFF-BREASTED and BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS, and MARBLED and
HUDSONIAN GODWITS, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, EVENING GROSBEAK, LARK
SPARROW, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, GOLDEN-WINGED and CONNECTICUT WARBLERS,
SUMMER TANAGER and more.
An immature WHITE-IBIS appeared Thursday on the North Fork out at
Orient Beach State Park and was relocated Friday feeding with mostly
GREAT EGRETS at the Brown’s Point marsh off Narrow River Road.
An immature MISSISSIPPI KITE was spotted and photographed last
Saturday as it flew over Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, and a SEDGE
WREN found last Sunday at Caumsett State Park was still heard today at
the grassland restoration site.
Good shorebird variety this week featured an AMERICAN AVOCET
continuing to visit the Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area at least to
Wednesday and an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER out in Jamaica Bay last
Saturday, with singles today at Jerome Reservoir in the Bronx and out
at Heckscher State Park Field 7. A MARBLED GODWIT was seen again
Sunday off Jones Beach Field 10, with 15 more today out at Old Inlet
in Bellport Bay, west of Smith Point County Park, where they were
joined by good numbers of shorebirds including 2 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, 6
HUDSONIAN WHIMBRELS, an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and a couple of WESTERN
SANDPIPERS, along with 3 CASPIAN TERNS. Single HUDSONIAN GODWITS were
on Jamaica Bay’s East Pond to Wednesday and at the end of Piermont
Pier Monday, and an UPLAND SANDPIPER was heard Sunday at Fresh Kills
Park on Staten Island. Lone BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were noted on
eastern Long Island, with singles at Sagg Pond Saturday and Monday, at
Cupsogue Saturday and at Mecox Sunday, and single BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS
were noted at Sagg Pond Sunday and Mecox Wednesday. WILSON’S
PHALAROPES on Jamaica Bay’s East Pond since Tuesday peaked with 4 or 5
there today around the north end, that pond also featuring SORA and
VIRGINIA RAIL.
The GLAUCOUS GULL often seen at Coney Island Beach was still there
Wednesday, and a BLACK TERN was off City Island in the Bronx
Wednesday.
A boat trip off Montauk Monday featured a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, a
PARASITIC JAEGER, and some CORY’S, SCOPOLI’S, GREAT, MANX and SOOTY
SHEARWATERS.
Single RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS visited Conference House Park on Staten
Island Saturday and Caumsett State Park Sunday.
Quite a surprise was a female EVENING GROSBEAK photographed in
Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery last Sunday. LARK SPARROWS this week
featured 2 at Fresh Kills Park Sunday, 1 at Heckscher State Park
Monday, and 1 seen in Green-Wood Cemetery Tuesday and Thursday.
Several PHILADELPHIA VIREOS were reported during the week, and single
YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS appeared in Pelham Bay Park last Saturday,
followed by 1 in Brookfield Park on Staten Island Sunday, and another
in Central Park’s Ramble Monday. A nice variety of WARBLERS included
GOLDEN-WINGED in Blydenburgh Park Saturday and Prospect Park Sunday
and CONNECTICUT today at Alley Pond Park and Green-Wood Cemetery. A
female-type SUMMER TANAGER was found today in the north end of Central
Park.
