We are in a severe drought down here in Oregon County. Trees are dying, and almost nothing is blooming. The hummingbirds are keeping me busy, and I’ve been setting out shallow, gravel-filled trays of sugar water for the bees and butterflies. I haven’t seen a single honey bee in my yard all year.
I also have my jelly feeder out, and a Summer Tanager visits consistently. She eats her fill and then flies over to catch a few bees at the trays. Mainly seems to prefer Yellow Jackets. So many different bees and pollinators I didn't know I had. I also have out water.
At night, the trays fill with moths and a ton of other things I can't identify, providing the tree frogs with a bug snack. It’s good entertainment.
It has been pretty slim pickings for migrating warblers, but I am seeing Nighthawks and Chimney Swifts.Will be happy to see many of you in Columbia.
