Greetings Birders,
Despite the continuing heat and humidity, birding at the Salton Sea over the past week has been awesome. The Species Conservation Habitat Project has created a three-mile long, divided impoundment at the southern end of the Salton Sea which is attracting a weath of migrants, including shorebirds, waders, terns, gulls, skimmers, cormorants, and pelicans. This area can be viewed (with a scope) from the west end of Bowles Road and the west end of Young Road. A week ago Bob Miller and I identified a Parasitic Jaeger and a Western Gull at the end of Young Road. Several days later Ezekiel Dobson also located a Long-tailed Jaeger there. Up to eight Yellow-footed Gulls and several Short-billed Dowitchers have been hanging around, too.
I thought that the huge heronry at the end of Bowles Road would be bare, so I was surprised when a few days ago there were still several dozen Neotropical and Double-crested Cormorants on nest, and that another nest still held a pair of Snowy Egret fledglings.
At the east end of Imperial County, I found a flock of Gambel's Quail with fledglings two days ago. Close by, at Living Waters (private), I was really happy to spot a handsome Yellow-throated Warbler.
