I haven't posted recently because the hawk watch sites have been doing so well and I can't compete with 64 bald eagles and 61 hummingbirds in one day. However, I live 50 miles southeast of Hawk Mountain in a valley, so here's what I've been seeing in the yard.
I don't get all the warblers like mountains do, but recently I've had Wilson's, magnolias, redstarts, a parula, a black-throated green, a northern yellow, several common yellowthroats, and a few I didn't see well enough to ID. Also, other species include rose-breasted grosbeaks, scarlet tanagers, several blue/gray gnatcatchers, a merlin, nighthawks, and several bald eagles of various ages. But most interesting have been flycatchers. Yesterday I had two eastern wood pewees, a willow flycatcher, a yellow-bellied flycatcher, an adult great crested, and a phoebe. Also, the chickadees I'm now seeing have lots of white on their wings, unlike the ones I see in the summer. I am, as I've said before, in the hybrid zone. And as for hummingbirds, I'm still seeing multiples each day, although I haven't seen an adult male for days because they're normally gone from here by this time.
