The September meeting of the Cayuga Bird Club will be on Monday, September 14 at 7:30 pm at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Cayuga Bird Club meetings are held on the second Monday of each month, September through June, and are free and open to the public. In-person meetings are held September through May at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, 159 Sapsucker Woods Road. Doors open at 6:45pm for social time before the reading of the basin bird list at 7:20. Club business begins at 7:30pm, followed by the speaker's presentation starting around 8:00pm and ending by 9:00pm.
Come hear our September speaker Dr. Meena Harribal, naturalist, nature photographer, adventure traveler
as she presents "Birding Aotearoa and Te Waipounamu, New Zealand". In Maori, Aotearoa means "Land of Long White Cloud," which is the northern island of New Zealand. Te Waipounamu means "The Place of Green Stone" which is the southern island of New Zealand. Before the arrival of humans, the birds were fearless as there were no land predators. The arrival of western civilization brought animals such as sheep, dogs, cats and rats, which decimated the local fauna and flora. Currently, conservationists are working to restore native and wild New Zealand by eradicating pests and protecting native fauna and flora. Meena visited a few such locations in a month and a half of travel, including Tiritiri Matangi, Zealandia, and Pelagic trips from Tutukaka and Kaikoura. She will share her experiences and the wildlife she observed with photos, audio recordings and videos. Bio: Meena is a long-time Cayuga Bird Club member. She is a naturalist, photographer, videographer, sound recorder and scientist and has traveled all over the world to seek nature. She retired from Cornell where she worked as a chemical ecologist and evolutionary biologist as well as a teacher of Indian languages. There will NOT be a speaker dinner, but Cayuga Bird Club Field Trip and Beginner Bird Walk leaders are invited to show up at the Lab of Ornithology at 6pm to try out the new voice amplification equipment and hear from Stephanie Herrick on how to use it effectively.
