Linda et al., Most whip-poor-wills leave the state in late August and early September, so Linda's bird isn't terribly unusual. They don't call as much this late in the season, so hearing one is definitely a treat. While they migrate over the same period, WPWs don't migrate WITH nighthawks. They don't flock (to the best of our knowledge!) and probably just sneak through under cover of complete darkness. Most spend the winter in southern Mexico and Central America, with a few also in Florida.
