Black Tern (Chlidonias niger) (1)
- Reported Sep 06, 2026 19:17 by Kilian Hampl
- Arroyo Grande Creek mouth, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6287241&<ll...>,-120.6287241
- Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S390657054
- Comments: "*Rare but regular. Continuing juvenile found by Logan, Joachim, and Chris. This bird was seen flying around the lagoon during the entire duration of my time here. I was able to see that the medium-length bill was dark and relatively thin and that the eye was dark as well. The face was white save for an obvious dark contrasting helmet typical of this species. The collar, throat, and underparts all the way to the undertail were also white. Also obvious was the dark breast tabs on the sides of the breast, characteristic of this species. The patagium and underwing coverts were pale while the undersides of the primaries and secondaries were darker but did not contrast strongly with the pale underwing coverts. Similarly, the upperside of the wing was grayish, appearing largely uniform in that regard. The back was washed a chestnut brown. Finally, the rump and tail were grayish, the latter of which was slightly forked. The legs and feet were dark. The bird’s distinctive swooping flight was reminiscent of a nighthawk. All this said, some of the finer details mentioned on this bird were not seen super well due to the very low level of light. Very poor ID photos tba."
