Back in the early 1980s, when I was a graduate student at Penn State University, I was on the State College Bird Club phone tree. I asked AI Mode "Who were the first members of the State College Bird club phone tree?" The answer indicated that the State College Bird Club phone tree started in the early 1970s, and that one of the initial members was Merrill Wood, the legendary ornithology professor here at Penn State. Merrill published several ornithology books including "Birds of Pennsylvania" in 1967 and "A Bander's Guide to Determining the Age and Sex of Birds" in 1969. If I am not mistaken, the latter book is often seen as the predecessor of Peter Pyle's very popular guides.
This discussion brings back very nice memories from long ago.

Can’t help but notice how many of the phone numbers did not include area code, because of course everyone in State College in the early ‘90s would have had the same one. (Kind of like it still is here in NH, ME or VT, where there is only one area code for each state…unless you’re from away like me and still have a PA area code on your cell phone). And of course the notion of home and office numbers, instead of a single mobile.
