I was down Massachusetts way this afternoon, and decided to stop by Plum Island for an hour or two, to look for shorebirds. I wound up being shocked at the lack of shorebirds. Of all birds, to be honest, but particularly shorebirds. What is going on with the management there? The Salt Pannes were so low they were mostly mudflats, and Bill Forward Pool was all ugly green algae. The only birds in binocular range of Hellcat dike were some cormorants and one peep; there were a lot more birds at the far end of the pool, but most were Canada geese, a couple of egrets, and what I think were three Glossy Ibis. The only place I found any shorebirds was the North Pool Overlook, and that was a single-species flock of forty or fifty Yellowlegs resting and preening. Did I just get a bad day, or is this normal for Plum Island these days?
