Subject: [pen-bird] Siberian Pipit-Importance of having a prepared mind and Kris Olson's legacy
Hello Peninsula Birders-
We received our Western Birds Volume 57, No. 3, 2026 thisweek and were pleased to read, on page 185, that Ron’s sighting of a Siberian Pipit at RadioRoad (Redwood Shores) on October 27, 2008 has been accepted by the California Bird RecordsCommittee (CBRC).  Ron was contacted toprovide a write-up and any available photos. Fortunately, we were able to access Kris Olson’s photos taken on October28, 2008.  To see the photos Kris’s 2ndreport on October 28, 2008 to Peninsula Birding includes a link toFlicker.  Other observers sent reports, positive and negative, to Peninsula Birding through October 31, 2008.
This record is an example of having a prepared mind.  Ron expresses in his write-up that he hadlooked for years through pipit flocks hoping to see this Asian pipit, which waspreviously considered a race of American Pipit.  Ron’s lengthy write-up can be seen in hisinitial report to Peninsula Birding dated October 27, 2008.  This record is also in the San Mateo CountyeBird record as Siberian Pipit, entered in the Sequoia Audubon Data (now SanMateo County Bird Alliance).

Great to have this species in the San Mateo Countyrecords!
