Bake Oven Knob 2 miles North of Germansville, Pennsylvania, USA Daily Raptor Counts: Sep 04, 2026 -------------------------------------------------------------------
A spectacular early season day with just a little bit of everything! Effectively all birds appeared on the north side of the ridge, but many snuck up on us and weren't seen until they were directly overhead. At one point, Brody and I had 8 individual eagles in view at once, all following the same flight line.
Non-raptor Observations: When I arrived, I was immediately realized there were a LOT of warblers moving. Not only were the trees below me teeming with birds, but one scan of the ridge would yield dozens of little yellow shapes bouncing south and giving buzzy little calls. I started counting them 1 by 1 as best I could, only taking time to identify birds who stopped to rest in front of me before continuing south.
I ended up with a grand total of 233 warblers, with THIRTY-FOUR Cape Mays making up the vast majority of what I could identify! Others included 1 blackpoll, 2 magnolia, 2 Blackburnian, 5 Tennessee, 1 redstart, 4 black-throated green, and 184 unidentified. One can only imagine what the count could've been if I'd arrived at dawn.
Also of note were a juvenile red-headed woodpecker and at least two bobolinks calling as they flew over me and Brody.
Lastly, I somehow ended up with the exact same count of eagles and Cape Mays, and almost the same amount of broad-wingeds, which I didn't realize until I submitted my checklist. A statistical inevitability, I guess, but still a little freaky.
