Lily H., Kira R., and I chased the continuing Pinyon Jays in the Laguna Mountains. As suggested in a previous post, we went in from Penny Pines and initially found the flock near the meadows here: 32.8998, -116.4662. The birds were always on the move, and we later had them here: 32.9025, -116.4701 . This time they were less organized and flying in multiple directions A little further to the north, they finally got the word along and passed all in the same direction, and we were able to count 97 individuals. We continued along the trail to Pine Creek Rd and also had some here: 32.9046, -116.4763
On our walk in, we had an early Green-tailed Towhee here: 32.9024, -116.4617
On our walk out, we were surprised by not one, but two Zone-tailed Hawks,the second passing minutes after the first (which had a notched secondary that the second bird did not).
