Tweets - The rain let up only a little before the survey, and the morning slowly cleared to mostly sunny by the end. Things have definitely changed around a bit since last week; birds were making many more calls, and the counts of many species were very different than in late August. We had a few First of Fall (FOF) birds as well.
Highlights: Band-tailed Pigeon - One flyby near the mansion; first in over a month Vaux's Swift - At least two over the Pea Patch, first in almost a month Ring-billed Gull - Two over the East Meadow (FOF) Sharp-shinned Hawk - Juvenile loudly going after a Northern Flicker while being harrassed by Steller's Jays, seen from the Lake Platform (FOF), and only our second of the year Western Warbling Vireo - Two heard; possibly our last of the year Violet-green Swallow - Several dozen over the meadows - We've had only one *maybe* sighting since early July Barn Swallow - About a dozen noted with the Violet-greens Red-winged Blackbird - First in a month; they often take an August vacation away Black-throated Gray Warbler - At least two just south of the East Meadow
We had several *maybe*s today; including a very interesting warbler-like chip note south of the Dog Area porta-potties, an empidonax in the willows near the south end of the East Meadow that may or may not have been a Willow, and what I was fairly sure was the first Black Swift of the year for the survey over the Pea Patch.
Misses today included Hooded Merganser, American Coot, Green Heron, Red-tailed Hawk, Willow Flycatcher (see note above), Bushtit, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Lincoln's Sparrow, Orange-crowned Warbler, and Black-headed Grosbeak.
For the day, 53 species identified.
