9/2 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center. 10am-1PM. low tide-rising, overcast, 70F. The marsh was very active with foraging birds at low tide this morning- 12 Snowy Egrets, 2 Great Egrets, 4 mallards, 5 American black ducks, 2 Greater yellowlegs, 2 Eastern Phoebes along the shoreline, 6 D.C. Cormorants, 1 American Oystercatcher, 18 Canada Geese flyovers, and 3 Yellow crowned night herons-1 Adult and 2 juveniles. The adult had just caught a crab in its beak when a Herring gull snuck up behind it, chased it and stole the crab after the YC night heron dropped it. We have 3 ospreys on the marsh -2 adults and the 1 juvenile which does fly, but spent 90% of the morning sitting on the nest calling- I presume begging for fish. I sure hope it learns to fish on its own soon. On the grounds: 1 Ruby throated hummingbird feeding on the trumpet vine flowers, 2 Mourning doves, 1 Catbird and 4 House sparrows. Bev Propen, Orange
