Reading your descriptions of the little birds and their behavior I suggest you were possibly looking at a flock of Bushtits. Always a treat to encounter this species and watch their antics..

> My birding skills are developing. This morning I was at the crest of the path to the estuary on 3rd St. I've named it the Fennel Grove because there are stands on both sides of the trail. On the sandspit side of the trail there were 13 small birds, unlike ones I can identify. I went to the Audubon Overlook on 4th St. because there are posters there with both land birds and water birds. The closest I could guess was a dark-eyed Junco. The photo says Rare. Maybe a California Gnatcatcher only because habitat is listed as coastal sage scrub? Not exactly. These birds were small. So many. Seeming to love the fennel seeds. They seemed very comfortable as I stood motionless, flitting, hanging horizontally upside down to eat the seeds. The whole display was quite remarkable. I left before they did. I would love more information.
