The Chino Farms property on the border between Del Mar and Fairbanks Ranch and Rancho Santa Fe, at the corner of Via de la Valle and Calzada del Bosque has a huge amount of good weedy grass habitat this year. Immense and widespread. Heck, there's actually too much! This is the area that over the past number of years has had a track record in the fall of producing bobolinks and dickcissels and rare buntings and sparrows. One needs a scope to scan the weed tops and post tops and best to come in the morning when birds are more apt to sit up. As usual, the best vantage points are along Calzada del Bosque, just east of the first set of temporary greenhouses and then also from the southwest corner of the property along Via de La Valle where there's a good sized dirt pull out. Be VERY CAREFUL of all the traffic along both roads, which is especially busy during commuting hours on weekdays.
My fairly brief check this morning, Sunday, produced a Yellow-headed blackbird and a Blue grosbeak and about 200 munias.
