A trio of birders from the Iowa City area visited Green Island Wildlife Management Area today despite the overcast and drizzly conditions. We had a spotting scope with us, and we saw 15 Common Gallinule. There was one adult and all the rest appeared to be immature birds. They were all in about the same area on the East side of what I would call the main dike. They were best observed through the spotting scope.
Overall, the area was fairly quiet, but we did observe a number of Sandhill Cranes, we had a flying American Bittern, and we had two Northern Harriers interacting with each as well as a third Harrier flying by itself.
