Visitors:
31 including a gentleman at the end hiking with a brilliant Cockatoo on his
shoulder. Thank you Mike and Chuck for sharing your time today and helping
spot birds.
Weather:
Nearly cloudless skies today. Visibility to Mount Washington all day. Low
humidity and light NW winds. Temperatures started in the high 50�s F and
topped out at 72 F mid-day
Raptor Observations:
6 local Bald Eagles seen in addition to the 4 migrants. One of the
highlights of the day was a procession of 3 bald eagles and a red-tail all
being dove upon by a local Peregrine Falcon causing an adult Bald Eagle to
vocalize several times before moving south.
Another highlight occurred in the closing hour as an adult Broadwing landed
in a broken birch very near the remaining observers and stayed constantly
surveying its surroundings for 6-7 minutes before something during his scan
caught its eye down slope from us.
A local Merlin circled the summit several times.
Non-raptor Observations:
RTHU 3 today/ 14 season
No noted local butterflies but first day seeing migrant monarchs.
Monarchs 5 today/ 5 season
Predictions:
Winds will have a SW component tomorrow and will stiffen a bit as the day
continues. I expect the first half of the day will be better than the
latter.
