I was on the Puget Sound Express Puffin Tour last Tuesday, August 25, and the highlight was an immature Nazca Booby. Totally unexpected, and probably a life bird for me. I may have seen it on the Galapagos trip I took back in 1986, back when it was a Masked Booby, but I seem to have lost my Galapagos list - but it's definitely a newbie on my North American life list, now it's no longer a Masked Booby.
We went to Smith Island. Lots and lots of Heerman's Gulls and Rhinoceros Auklets (still in breeding plumage), and a half dozen gorgeous Tufted Puffins (also still in breeding plumage). And quite a few Common Murres, and a few Pigeon Guillemots, Red-necked Grebes, and Brandt's Cormorants. And lots of Glaucous-winged and Olympic Gulls (nobody paid any attention to the gulls). And there was a nice orca on the way back to Edmonds - T137A aka Jack, a 24 year old male. The company puts their trip lists on Facebook, so if you don't do Facebook (I don't), you won't know what they have been seeing, so I figured I'd let the Tweeter folks know.
The weather was perfect and it was a glorious day. Heck, with the Nazca Booby, it would have been a glorious day no matter what the weather was like!
