Visitors: I feel anyone taking the time to read my little journal entry of data should be upgraded to visitor status. In person, though, 4 visitors between morning and afternoon, interacted with 1.
Weather: Put yourselves in my shoes, for just a minute. You arrive in the morning to find the Knob has about 20 feet of visibility. You wait around for a few hours, and when it hasn't resolved by noon and a thunderstorm lingers in the forecast, you leave. At home, you have the lunch you packed, shower, and get tucked into bed ready for a lovely nap in the rain.
Then as you're dozing off, your boss texts to inform you that suddenly, it's lovely outside!
Well, hawkwatching isn't for quitters.
Once I got there I was only able to count for about 90 minutes. I'd wanted to stay for longer to make up for lost time, but my phone died on the way and thunder boomed in the distance. I didn't want to take any chances. But no regrets!
Morning: foggy, no visibility. Afternoon: 75-76 F, 60% cloud cover, light south wind with gusts to 5 mph.
Raptor Observations: With similar wind to yesterday, I wasn't surprised to see the few raptors I had followed a similar flight line - arriving from due north and passing over the ridge to continue due south.
Also, one owl yesterday was upgraded to two duetting today!
Non-raptor Observations: In the morning at the knob, had a hooded warbler, fish crow, 2 scarlet tanagers, black and white, black throated green, redstart, YB cuckoo
While waiting for the fog to die, I went poking around in the woods near the trails and found a northern slimy salamander, ring-necked snake, and red chanterelles.
In the afternoon visit, had an interesting observation of two clamp-tipped emeralds chasing each other and then copulating.
