The Harris Center has again (for a fifth consecutive year) been coordinating a nighthawk watch from private land in Hancock along the shore of Powder Mill Pond.Volunteers estimated 926 nighthawks during tonight's watch, bringing this 'count' (which can be frustrating, as birds seem to travel in multiple directions frequently to feed here) to 2,261 for the season since the start date of August 20. We plan to count until September 4.
Elsewhere in the Monadnock Region, two volunteers have been counting regularly in downtown Peterborough, where results have yet to be posted for this evening.Away from the river about a mile at a higher elevation, I saw zero nighthawks during a field trip focused on birds, insects, and plants, but the story was quite different in Keene. Tonight, during a Harris Center annual field trip led by Brett Thelen, Nate Marchessault, and Cliff Seifer, an incredible 2,390 birds were tallied at the Stone Arch Village near Green Wagon Farm between 530 and 7 pm!
